WARRINGTON Wolves are, once again, on the hunt for a new half-back.

When Tyrone Roberts’ signature was announced, we all saw the Youtube clips of him scything through NRL defences and had a collective thought of “wow.”

Could this guy have finally been the one to make a success of the challenge of replacing Lee Briers – something The Wire have arguably failed to do since he retired in 2013?

Alas, it was not to be and these are the risks we take in Super League.

Whenever an Australian player is brought in, there is always the risk of them either failing to settle – as has been the case with Roberts – or being tempted back to the NRL by a big-money offer.

Warrington are not alone in being burned by this kind of thing. Super League clubs are always treading on eggshells in this regard.

Unfortunately, it is the reality of our competition.

Roberts’ best moments in a Wire shirt may still be ahead of him, however, and hopefully this announcement can work strangely in their favour.

With all rumours about his future now put to bed, I think it means he can play with a bit more freedom.

In the Challenge Cup quarter-final win over Wigan – The Wire’s biggest game of the season to date – he showed he can perform under pressure.

A few more displays like that in the big games to come will ensure he is remembered fondly, especially if he helps the team to silverware.

This episode certainly lacks the shock and ire Chris Sandow’s sudden departure created. Unlike when his countryman simply upped and left, you always had the feeling this news may have been coming.

He has conducted himself with honesty and for that, he deserves credit.

Now, however, attention turns to finding a replacement. For this, Warrington have plenty of financial resource and, perhaps more importantly, plenty of time.

Talk of Kyle Eastmond returning to rugby league with Wolves is not going away and while he would inevitably bring a ‘wow’ factor, how much time would it take for him to get up to speed with the 13-man game again?

Will they go back Down Under? That’s undoubtedly where the best talent is, but it would be at risk of ending up back at square one again.

Steve Price has earned the right to be backed to the hilt in his hunt for a new pivot and I have no doubt that he will be, but The Wire’s next move in this area is a very important one.
