WOOLSTON Rovers’ under 18s suffered a heart-breaking golden-point defeat as Wigan St Patricks ended their Lancashire Cup campaign at the quarter-final stage.

Rovers were 16-14 ahead at half-time and two more tries earned them a 10-point lead, but the hosts stormed back to force extra time.

St Pats then dropped a goal early in extra time to break Woolston hearts.

Dec Leonard scored a try and four goals for the visitors, with further tries coming from Kieran Jones, Tom Lowe and Jake Eccles.

“I am absolutely gutted for the lads to see them lose the game like that,” Rovers under 18s head coach John Morris said.

“We had several players missing, but the boys who went out onto the field gave it their all and were cruelly denied at the end in controversial circumstances.

“We were ahead for long periods but were unable to shake St Pats off and they came back at us at the end to force extra time against the run of play.

“We cannot change anything now so we will dust ourselves down and get ready for some important league games coming up.”
