TWO of Warrington Wolves’ highest points scorers of all time were inducted into the Warrington Wolves players’ Hall of Fame together, today.

Lee Briers and Steve Hesford joined a prestige honours board of Wire greats at today’s annual past players’ lunch.

Although the legendary pair played in different eras, they are connected through the ability they had to amass points wearing the primrose and blue shirt.

When Briers retired on medical grounds at the end of the 2013 season, he did so having taken the all-time Wire points scoring record off Hesford – a total that had stood for 28 years.

Briers racked up 2,586 points in his 425 matches between 1997 and 2013, made up of 154 tries, 948 goals and 74 drop goals.

Hesford’s total stood at 2,416 when his Wire days ended in 1985, 10 years after making his debut.

He remains Wire’s greatest goalkicker though, holding the club record of 1,112 from 318 games.

And his most goals in one season, 170 (including 13 drop goals) in 1978-79, has never been bettered.

His 46 drop goals were a Wire record until Briers took that off him too.

Staying on the theme of records, Briers holds the honours for most goals and points in a match too – 44 points and 16 goals, coming in the 112-0 Challenge Cup defeat of Swinton at The Halliwell Jones Stadium in 2011.

One-time Great Britain international Briers, 39, now an assistant coach to Steve Price leading a rejuvenated Wire assault on Super League, is a former Warrington and Wales skipper who won three Challenge Cup medals, a League Leaders’ Shield and appeared in two Grand Finals.

The half-back won the Lance Todd Trophy for his man-of-the-match display in the Wembley triumph over Leeds Rhinos in 2010, and was crowned Super League Young Player of the Year in the 1997 season that he joined The Wire from hometown club St Helens.

Hesford, 64, played full-back, centre and wing for The Wire and was Mr Consistency with the boot.

For eight consecutive seasons he kicked more than 100 goals.

He was man of the match when The Wire beat Widnes in the John Player Trophy Final at Knowsley Road, St Helens, in 1978.

Zambia-born Hesford, signed from Fleetwood Rugby Union Club following his earlier attempts to make it as a goalkeeper in professional football, won further medals in the John Player Trophy in 1981 and the Lancashire Cup in 1980 and 1982.

He had a brief stint with Huddersfield after leaving Wire but finished due to injuries taking their toll.

After rugby he went into the pub trade, the bed and breakfast business and then advertising sales.
