Warrington Town 4 Hednesford Town 1

YELLOWS trail Evo-Stik Premier Division leaders Altrincham by just one point after they saw off Hednesford Town on Tuesday night.

Paul Carden’s side trailed through Danny Glover’s early opener, but Sean Williams and Devarn Green struck in quick succession to ensure they led at the break.

Tony Gray then added a third to give Town a vital two-goal cushion before Williams’ second strike sent them closer to the summit after Altrincham were held at home by Mickleover Sports.

Town were missing 16-goal top scorer Jamie McDonald through injury and they were pushed back early as the visitors started brighter.

Green’s blistering pace created a crossing opportunity that just evaded Joe Piggott, but from then Hednesford asserted themselves.

Moments after Callum Mendez-Jones had a penalty appeal waved away after tumbling under the challenge of Jack Higgins, they took the lead.

James Lawrie’s free kick went deep to the far post, where Glover was waiting to loop a header past Tony McMillan.

The visitors were winning the physical battle and took a while to get to grips with the game, with Tom Thorley having an effort saved by McMillan.

However, they had a golden chance to equalise when, after Steve Jennings had a close-range effort blocked, the ball rebounded to Williams but his effort was superbly saved by Pitmen stopper James Wren.

The Yellows midfielder was not to be denied for long and, after Green was taken down right on the edge of the area, Williams curled an exquisite low free kick past Wren.

Hednesford were stunned and Town took full advantage just before half-time when Williams’ through ball was left by Gray to free the onrushing Green, who calmly slotted into the far corner.

Buoyed by their positive end to the first half, Yellows hit the accelerator after the break and pushed the visitors right back.

After a couple of crosses from Gray had fizzed across goal, the experienced striker got on the end of a chance.

He was put through on goal and finished calmly beyond Wren after shifting the ball onto his left foot.

Hednesford started to establish some possession after going two goals down, but the Town defence held them at bay relatively comfortably.

Despite more Pitmen pressure, it was Yellows who scored again thanks to some more dead-ball brilliance from Williams.

He took control of a free kick just right of centre and once again bent the ball round the wall and in at Wren’s near post.
