WARRINGTON Wolves started the Under 19s Academy season with a home defeat against a strong and experienced City of Hull side at Victoria Park Stadium.

City of Hull had second row Adam Rooks sin binned after just three minutes for punching but they then opened the scoring five minutes later when a high kick to the corner by stand-off Harry Whittles was palmed back by centre Kieran Buchanan and winger Josh Atkinson picked up to score in the left corner.

Pressure by the visitors then paid off as scrum-half Harrison Morrow was held just short but hooker Tom Jubb burrowed over from dummy half to score wide out on the right.

Just after the midway point of the half quick hands from Morrow and centre Cameron Scott created space for winger Elliot Wallis to go over in the right corner.

Wolves got on the scoreboard three minutes later when they forced an error on the Hull 10-metre line.

From the scrum substitute Eribe Doro was held just short and a quick play the ball saw hooker Brad Pinder go down the blind side and combined with centre Lewis Hall for winger Joe Edge to squeeze over in the left corner. Edge landed a fine touchline conversion.

Four minutes before the interval Hull substitute Charlie Patterson-Lund broke through the Wolves line and he offloaded to Morrow who put Scott over on the right to give his side a 16-6 half-time advantage.

Three minutes into the second half Buchanan broke down the left for City of Hull and he found Atkinson on his outside who raced clear before passing back inside to Buchanan who scored at the side of the posts. Substitute Ben Butler converted.

Four minutes later substitute Bobby Downs broke from dummy half and shot through a gap before finding full-back Lochlan Fitzgerald in support to race 40 metres and score at the side of the posts. Butler added the conversion.

Wolves refused to lie down and almost immediately went upfield and after substitute Elliott Windley had been held just short Pinder chipped into the in-goal area and loose forward Ellis Robson reacted quickest to win the race and score at the left of the posts. Edge converted.

Four minutes later a strong run from Doro saw him held just short but from the play the ball a bullet pass from Pinder put Robson over at the right of the posts. Edge again added the extras.

Hull had prop forward Rob Branton sin binned on the hour for a spear tackle but then five minutes later Wolves were also temporarily reduced to 12 men when Pinder was yellow carded for holding down.

Just as Pinder was about to re-enter the field CofH made sure of the victory when Buchanan broke down the middle before finding Atkinson in support and he went 50 metres to score at the left of the posts. Whittles added the conversion to complete a hard-fought 34-18 win for the Humbersiders.

Wolves under 19s head coach Stuart Barrow said: “It was a tough start for us against a big City of Hull side and we will certainly learn from this.

"We had a very different side to the one that finished last season with seven of the 17 on duty playing their first game in under 19s rugby after moving up from under 16s.

"We played some good rugby at times, especially in the second half, but we cannot afford to give teams like CofH opportunities because they will punish you.

"I was very pleased with some of our go-forward and we will be working hard once again this week in training to get ourselves ready for the trip to St Helens on Sunday, kick off 2pm at Ruskin Drive.”
