THREE senior members of Woolston Karate Club will represent England at the United World Karate World Championships in Italy at the end of the month.

Selections of John Cameron, his daughter Rebecca, and Darron Mcquillan, who all live in Paddington, maintain the prestigious tradition of a club in its 40th anniversary year.

John, 53, a quality assurance engineer is called up to the event in Montecatini as part of the England refereeing contingent.

Sports Direct employee Rebecca, 19, is selected for kumite (fighting) and for kata (forms).

Full-time karate instructor Darron, 52, is picked for veterans kata.

John and Darron's link goes back to the days of studying together at Woolston High School.

All of their selections are based on outstanding performances competing over the past 12months throughout the UK as part of the SSKA England Squad led by head coach Paul Graham and at the WUKF European Championships earlier this year in Romania.

It was in Romania that John was awarded WUKF continental judge status, Rebecca achieved a silver medal for kumite and Darron claimed bronze in kata.

“It has been a terrific and rewarding year for the three of us, and also for the club which was started 40 years ago in Woolston by sensei Ian Barlow," said Darron, a fourth dan who is chief instructor at Woolston Karate Club which operates at Woolston CE Primary School, Epping Drive, on Tuesday and Thursday nights and caters for all ages and abilities.

New members and sponsors are always welcome.
