STRIKERS tend to set personal targets in terms of goals, but Warrington Town frontman Tony Gray’s only aim is promotion.

The experienced striker joined the club from Welsh Premier League side Airbus UK in the summer and has impressed many with his contributions, scoring five goals so far.

Now fit again after a recent spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, Gray says he always “plays it by ear” in terms of goal targets and is more focused on the collective aim.

With the likes of Brad Barnes and Dylan Vassallo also slowly returning from injury, the 33-year-old says the increased competition for places can only help results.

“I’ve always played it by ear with the goals, as long as we’re winning games I’m happy,” he said.

“If the goals come, they come and that’s great. I know a lot of people say that but that’s all I’m bothered about.

“The only target I’ve got is winning promotion with the team.

“We’ve done well considering the injuries we’ve had.

“It’s a great position for us to be in, people are starting to come back from injury now so it’s time for us to push on.

“There’s going to be some competition for places when everyone’s back. I know a few have left recently, but there’s still plenty of places to fight for.”

Gray has not long since returned to Paul Carden’s first-team squad after a hamstring injury that halted a promising run of form.

Despite a long career at non-league level, the former Chester and Telford striker says being on the sidelines for so long was a new feeling for him.

“I think I was out for around six or seven weeks, but I’m made up to be back,” he said.

“You never realise how much you miss playing until you have to stop for a bit.

“I felt like I’d just started to hit a bit of form. I felt fit and I was scoring goals, so that made it even more frustrating for me.

“I’ve never been out injured for that long so it was really disappointing, but fingers crossed everything is alright at the minute.”

After a brief interlude for the FA Trophy clash with Ashton United on Saturday, Gray’s side are back in Evo-Stik Premier Division action this weekend.

They travel to mid-table Mickleover Sports on Saturday, kick off 3pm, and the Yellows striker believes now is the time to “cash in” and build a solid winning run.

Despite Town dropping points six times in Tuesday-night fixtures this campaign, Gray feels having more midweek games would help on that front.

“I don’t personally like having big breaks in between matches and Tuesday games give you a good run at things in terms of getting into form,” he said.

“It’s a good chance for us to cash in in these next few weeks and get some points on the board.

“If we can do that and have a good run of form, teams around us will be even more wary of what we can do.”
