WARRINGTON Athletics Club veteran Nick Jones has been selected to run for England next month.

Jones will represent his country as part of England Athletics’ Vet-40 Masters cross country team, who will compete at the British and Irish Masters international race in Derry on November 18.

Ahead of his international race, Jones picked up one of Warrington’s four medals at the first round of the Manchester Area Cross Country League on Saturday.

Jones took silver at Heaton Park in the V40 catergory, but fellow veteran and debutant Dave Norman went one better.

In his first race for Warrington since moving from Wirral AC, Norman claimed gold in the V55 section by completing the course in 41mins 2secs.

Further down the age spectrum, the under 17s men’s team of Joe Buckley, Jordan Jones and Jack Wadsworth also came away with the top prize.

Buckley’s time of 22mins 19secs was enough for fifth place overall, with Jones seven seconds behind him in sixth and Wadsworth coming home 14th in 23mins 38secs.

Olivia Baker ran well in the same age group to finish 12th in the women’s race, stopping the clock at 30mins 11secs.

In the under 13s girl’s race, Orla Gregory ran superbly to take a bronze medal in 13mins 28secs and also finished sixth in the team event alongside fellow A team members Molly Wormald, 25th, and Maisie Bell, 27th.

The B team of Eva Ferris, Lucie Davies and Isobel Houghton came 13th, with the C team of Emily Entwistle, Jasmine Jones and Shauna Clarke finishing 21st.

In the same age group, Erik Marshall was the club’s only runner in the boys’ race and finished eighth in 12mins 47secs.

The under 15s girls race saw Jess Connolly make her club debut, finishing 19th in 23mins 12 secs and helping the team to 14th place alongside Fay Humphreys, 57th, and Isla Kenworthy, 59th.

Caroline Jones was the first Warrington runner home in the senior/under 20s women’s race as she finished 99th, and her time of 45mins 19secs was good enough for 11th place in the over 40s age group.

Rachel McQuillan finished 124th overall but seventh in the under 20s after clocking 46mins 40secs.
