Carlisle 29 Warrington 27

A PENALTY try deep into added time meant Warrington left Cumbria having tasted an agonising defeat.

The killer blow came just after Jack Morgan had crossed to give them the lead for the first time with the game approaching the 80-minute mark.

Tom Wood, Nathan Beesley, Phil Lynch and Steve Pilkington had earlier scored for Andy Roberts’ side, who collected two losing bonus points.

“We are pleased with most of our play just now, but our concentration is lax at times,” Roberts said.

“With a string of home games ahead we are confident of improving our league position.”

Carlisle were able to open up a 12-point lead in the opening stages, with Kieran Hughes dropping the ball over the line in Warrington’s best chance.

The visitors did open their account when Wood finished off a break to reduce the lead to seven points.

A try out wide allowed Carlisle to stretch the lead, but Beesley immediately reigned them in again.

Another home try meant Warrington trailed by 12 points with 15 minutes remaining, but that was the catalyst for a comeback.

Lynch found a gap in the Carlisle defence to cross the whitewash before Pilkington ghosted through between the posts to level the scores.

Pilkington, Hughes and Tom Arnold were then involved in a superb move that sent Morgan crashing over for what looked like a game-winning score.

However, lapses in concentration allowed Carlisle to squeeze the Warrington scrum and, after the fifth consecutive set piece, the referee awarded a penalty try.
