TONY Smith says Wolves will keep things “as normal as possible” while trying to enjoy his final game in charge against Hull Kingston Rovers tomorrow, Saturday.

The game will see Smith bring the curtain down on a nine-year reign as The Wire’s head of coaching and rugby.

Several players, including Kurt Gidley, Ashton Sims and Peta Hiku, will also play their final games in primrose and blue on what is likely to be an emotional day at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

However, Smith has urged his players to put emotion aside for 80 minutes against the Robins while still enjoying their play.

With both sides having secured their place in Super League for next year, the game has nothing riding on it but Wolves’ outgoing boss still expects a committed performance from his side.

“We’re human beings and there are emotions involved, but we’re also professional sportspeople,” he said.

“You put those things aside as best you can and there certainly won’t be any focus on players, coaches or staff that may be leaving.

“We’ll keep things as normal as possible, do our jobs on the day and everything will be fine.

“Enjoying it is a big part of it. I think we saw at Featherstone that we were enjoying ourselves.

“It was a very, very good performance. It showed commitment and that we’re playing not just for status but for honour, the club and for each other.

“All that still counts on Saturday. Each player will have their own different reasons for stepping up and will have their own motivation.

“For many, it will be the last time they will run out in our colours. It’s important you put it in the right focus and play rugby league.”

Following Sunday’s 68-0 victory at Featherstone Rovers, they have the opportunity to equal a club record this weekend.

Victory over Tim Sheens’ side would be their tenth in a row, which would be level with the mark they set in 2014.

Wolves will attempt this with an unchanged starting line-up, only the second time they have had that luxury this season.

There will be changes on the bench, with Joe Philbin, Benjamin Jullien and Brad Dwyer also set to come in.

Jack Johnson, who scored twice after coming off the bench at Featherstone, Morgan Smith and George King will drop out of the matchday squad to accomodate the returning trio.

The news means that Matty Blythe and Kevin Penny, who were the latest players to have their departures from the club confirmed this week, have played their last games for Wolves as well as Sam Wilde and Rhys Evans, who are also leaving.

Sunday’s victory at Post Office Road saw them keep their opponents off the scoresheet for the first time in a competitive game since an 80-0 victory over Wakefield in April 2015.

Smith says he was delighted with his side’s improvement and attitude in keeping their clean sheet but expects a bigger test of their defence against a Rovers side that have won five of their six Middle 8s games to bounce back to Super League at the first attempt.

“We’d expect an upturn in that respect, hopefully we’ll pick up where we left off in terms of our attitude in defence which I thought was first-class last week.

“Our start helped us out by having the ball for the first 12 minutes or so.

“There was an attitude there right until the end, like we saw a few last-ditch efforts where they were pushed into touch.

“The commitment was there and hopefully that will be the case this week.”
