MATTY Blythe has retired from rugby league after Wolves confirmed he would be leaving the club at the end of the season.

The Wire confirmed Blythe and Kevin Penny would both be leaving when the season comes to a close earlier this afternoon.

Blythe, who returned to the club from Bradford Bulls ahead of 2017, has only made four appearances this year, confirmed his retirement in a statement posted on Twitter.

The 28-year-old utility's last appearance for the club saw him limp off during the defeat at Castleford Tigers on June 11, the last of his three appearances this term.

Winger Penny has played three times this campaign, with his last appearance coming against Wakefield on July 1.

The number of players departing Wolves now rises to nine, with Ashton Sims (Toronto), Andre Savelio (Brisbane), Sam Wilde (Widnes), Rhys Evans (Leigh)Β and Brad Dwyer (Leeds) having all secured new clubs.

Peta Hiku is returning to New Zealand for family reasons, while Kurt Gidley is retiring from the game.
