TONY Smith believes there is more to come from Peta Hiku after his virtuoso display in Thursday’s 22-6 win over Widnes Vikings.

The New Zealand international capped a man-of-the-match display by crossing for his first Wolves try in the second half.

Hiku also set Matty Russell up for one of his two tries, but Smith believes the Wire faithful have still not seen the best of the 24-year-old.

Smith also praised the contribution of Hiku’s fellow centre Ryan Atkins in the victory over their near neighbours.

“I think there’s more to come from Peta, but what I’ve seen is pretty good so far,” he said.

“He’s been pretty good since day one, but he has got better and he looks more comfortable.

“The style of play is different to the NRL. I was interested to see him pick up from a Widnes error and kick the ball on the free play, that’s new to him as well. He’s picked it all up pretty quick.

“He know everybody’s name now, which helps! He knows the names of plays and the calls we use.

“I thought our two centres were terrific tonight. Ryan was unbelievably strong.

“He came up with some really strong plays and we played off the back of those.

“Peta came up with some terrific stuff as well, the two of them were outstanding.”

Hiku and Russell were joined on the scoresheet by former Vikings skipper Kevin Brown as The Wire completed Super League’s regular rounds in winning fashion.

Warrington-born Joe Mellor had given an understrength Widnes side a 6-4 lead at the interval in what was a below-par showing before the break from the hosts.

“We were a bit disjointed in that first half. We had a new combination at half back and that took a bit to come around to.

"Kevin Brown and Matty Russell haven't played for a few weeks. They were rusty and having no Chris Hill makes a difference.

"I just thought we were rushing ourselves in trying to throw passes when we didn't need to.

"We got hold of that in the second half. Our defence got better which enabled us to do a little more with the ball.

"It was a good work-out for us. I thought Kevin and Dec Patton combined pretty well in the second half.”
