MIKE Cooper says Wolves still have plenty of work to do if they are to avoid finishing in the Middle 8s.

Saturday’s trip to Wakefield Trinity is another crucial game for The Wire as they aim to scrape into Super League’s top eight and escape a fight for survival.

The 24-16 victory over Catalans Dragons on Saturday ended a run of six games without a win, but Cooper says there are still many things that must improve.

“We’ve got to cut out some of our stupid errors. They are not the sign of a top side but we’re heading in the right direction,” he said.

“We’re still being really dumb at times, like people not being there at the play-the-ball and daft penalties for pushing.

“We’ve got to cut them out but we’ll keep learning.

“There’s certainly a much better mood now but we know there is still hard work to do and we’ll be working as hard as ever.

“There’s four games left, confidence is high so let’s see what happens.”

After Saturday’s visit to fifth-placed Trinity, Wolves’ remaining three games are against sides in similar positions in the table.

They face home games against Leigh and Widnes either side of a trip to Wigan, but Cooper says victory over the Dragons could be just the catalyst they needed.

He also says there has been a change in attitude within the squad to a “one game at a time” mentality.

“It’s been a long time coming, we needed that win,” he said.

“It was tough backing up after the cup game against Wigan but I’m just pleased we’ve been able to get over the line.

“There was a different feel to training last week. It’s very much a sense of there being so many games to go and just ticking them off one at a time.

“It is a hard place to go but it’s just another team for us to tick off.”

Saturday could see New Zealand international Peta Hiku make his debut for the club after he joined from Penrith Panthers.

Cooper played against the 24-year-old at club level with St George Illawarra Dragons and for England against New Zealand and believes his arrival is a key one for The Wire.

The prop also thinks Hiku’s versatility is a huge asset for the squad.

“He’s exactly what we need at the moment,” he said.

“Versatility is massive for us and he has that. There’s not many positions in the back line he can’t play.

“He’s sort of a stocky build but he’s got good footwork. He comes out of the line and has really good defence as well.”
