LUCY Glover says winning a senior race at the Henley Women’s Regatta in her final outing for Warrington Rowing Club was “a proud moment.”

Despite still being eligible to compete as a junior, the 18-year-old entered the George Innes Cup for elite single sculls on Sunday.

Glover won both of her races to take overall honours, putting her in a good position to represent Great Britain at the World Rowing Under 23s Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria next month.

All this came while the Lymm High School Sixth Form student was in the midst of her A-Level exams, but Glover says she was happy with how her training had gone.

“I went into the event with no pressure but just excitement to get on the course and enjoy the row,” she said.

“It was a proud moment with having undergone a decent training block and in the midst of finishing my A level exams.

“I never head into competitions with expectations of winning but that underlying desire is always there.

“It was kind of heading into the unknown with this race as it was elite and I am still a junior, but I held my ground and raced hard out of the blocks to see what I could do.”

Before a potential trip to Plovdiv with Great Britain, Glover looks set to race at Henley Royal Regatta next week.

Should her exams also turn out the right way, she hopes to attend Edinburgh University to help enhance her rowing career.

Her achievements so far have prompted talk of a potential Olympic call-up for the 2020 Games in Tokyo, but Glover admits that may be a push.

“We will see, it is a definite goal,” she said.

“Tokyo may be a little soon but potentially the next one. The Olympics is a long way away yet and lots of training to be done.

“Edinburgh is my top option currently, depending on what grades I get.

“It is a GB high performance rowing centre so will help me move on to the next level.”
