NICK Jones emerged victorious in his age group at the British Masters 5km Championships on Sunday.

By finishing third overall in Horwich with a time of 15mins 59secs, the Warrington Athletics Club runner was first in the over 40s age group to take the title.

Jones’ club mates Tony McCarthy, David Gill and Mervyn Ward also had medals to show for their efforts in the sweltering heat as they secured team silver for Warrington in the 55-64 age group.

Elsewhere, some of the younger Warrington Athletics Club members helped Cheshire to victory in the Mason Trophy inter-counties schools match on Saturday.

Tom Baines was one of 13 Warrington athletes to take part in Birmingham and won the intermediate boys’ 400m in a new personal best time of 49.58secs, narrowly missing out on breaking the club’s under 17s record which has stood since 1965.

Tristan Hall also ran a personal best 54.46secs in the B race, with Josh Herrington breaking his own club record in the high jump after clearing 1.85m.

Cameron Duff recorded times of 11.51secs and 23.23secs in the 100m and 200m respectively, with his effort over the shorter distance giving him a new personal best.

Joe Buckley finished just outside his best time in the 3,000m as he clocked 9mins 18.52secs, with Joe Williams also finishing just short of his best in the 100m hurdles by recording a time of 15.06secs.

For the girls, Rebecca Hardy equalled her best 80m hurdles time of 12.40secs, with Natasha Ryder setting a personal mark in the hammer with a throw of 31.75m.

Ryder’s distance was short of club mate Megan Kettle, who threw 41.36m, while Chloe Mason ran the 300m in 44.95secs and Amy Nuttall completed 1,500m in 5mins 1.51secs.

Ashley Nemits ran well in the junior girls’ 200m, stopping the clock at 26.5secs, while Jack Garner finished the boys’ 80m hurdles in 13.23secs.

Meanwhile, Meg Corker starred for Warrington in their latest Youth Development League match by scooping three wins.

Corker won the under 13s girls’ 75m, long jump and 70m hurdles events, while Lucy Entwistle set personal bests in winning the B 150m and B Javelin events.

Eva Ferris, A 1200m, Lisa Halliday, B 70m hurdles, and Olivia Chamun, B shot, also set personal bests in the same age group, with Molly Wormald winning the B 1,200m race.

For the boys, Rhys Hopkins was the only winners, twinning in the A and B 1500m races respectively.

Emily Jackson was the only club winner in the under 15s age group, claiming victory in the B 300m race.

Tom McKean, B 200m, Lucas Hayes, A high jump, and Oliver Meadows, B high jump, also recorded personal bests.
