NEWCOMER Grace Rigby made an impression on an introduction to angling at Statham Pool, which she visited with dad Dave.

The 10-year-old started off with a cracking tench, and some small roach, taken on the pole and red maggot at five metres.

Dave was kept busy casting for her after switching to a method feeder, but by the end of the session Grace had got the hang of it.

Six years since his previous visit to Woodshaw Reservoir, when he caught around a dozen fish, Jay Simmonds returned last week for a brief session.

He float-fished close in, where he found the fish in a good feeding mood to end up with 16 crucians along with a few bream.

He reckoned there were plenty of goldfish hybrids, weighing up to a couple of pounds or so, but the good news is that six were 100 per cent crucian carp.

Eric Smith’s trip to Grey Mist Mere on Sunday, with grandson Callum and ‘Fishless’ Fletcher in tow, wasn’t the most productive.

The trio spent seven hours waiting for a bite and, when it came, Eric hit into what he thought would be a good tench.

As Callum rushed to set up his camera, Eric cringed while Fishless grabbed the landing net as the head of a large eel broke surface.

Having only caught one previously of a decent size, Fishless might have landed a personal best only for the line to part after he had made at least half-a-dozen attempts.

Association vice-president Geoff Brooks took first prize in our disabled and over 60s match, on the Bridgewater Canal at Keckwick, with a net of 4-15-0.

He fished pole and pinkie to catch a brace of bonus bream, plus some roach.

His winning weight was almost double that of second-placed George Barber, who fished bread punch for 2-8-12 of small roach.

A working party meets from 10am this Saturday at Appleton Reservoir, where we hope to bring back night fishing on a trial basis.

If enough volunteers help with a clean-up and tidy, then we’ll hopefully bring a number of the old pegs back into use.

A final shout-out for a surveyor among our members that is willing to produce a couple of drawings to help resolve an access dispute on our stretch of the River Wye.

Please get in touch.

Our headquarters at 52 Parker Street are open as usual every Friday, between 7pm and 9pm for memberships, subscriptions, night-permit renewals and any queries.
