STEFAN Ratchford hopes that he will spend the rest of his career at Warrington Wolves after signing a new contract with the club.

The 28-year-old has penned a new deal to add two years to his stay, keeping him at the Wire until the end of 2020.

Ratchford has rubbished rumours that he was on the verge of signing for St Helens.

He said: “It got mentioned before I went to Australia for the England v Samoa game that there would be a contract extension sorted, it was just a case of finding the right time.

“It’s been being sorted for the past couple of weeks, so all the rumours that were flying around were quite amusing as I knew that the contract was going to be done in the next few days.

“I’ve absolutely no idea where the rumours came from and there has never been any talk of me leaving.

“Someone has obviously got two and two and come up with 10.

“I think at the end of every year I’ve been at the club I’ve been rumoured to go somewhere else, but I’ve never looked for a move away.

“There was never any doubt about me going anywhere and I’m really happy to be staying.”

Ratchford has established himself at full-back in the side over the past year, having previously played in the halves, centres and back row for the club since signing from Salford Red Devils ahead of the 2012 season.

But he is still happy to play any role in the team handed to him by head coach Tony Smith.

Ratchford said: “For the last 12 or 15 months I’ve played 99 per cent of my rugby at full-back and in that time I’ve been a lot more consistent.

“Learning how to play one role rather than trying to pick up a few roles and changing every few weeks helps you to master that role and get some fluency and consistency in your performances.

“It’s a really difficult position to learn – if you’re one step off positionally then you give yourself a lot to do.

“I’m still learning the position now but the more games you play in that position, the better you’re going to become.

“But I’ve always said I’m happy to do what’s best for the team – if it came to it that I had to play centre or stand-off I’d be more than happy to do that as well.”

Ratchford has also underlined his ambition to win the Super League Grand Final with Warrington Wolves.

He added: “The club will always be judged on how many Grand Finals its won and to have a zero at the side of our name is really disappointing.

“I know we’ve had successes with the Challenge Cup and the League Leaders’ Shield but at the end of the day the Grand Final is the one trophy that every player wants to win and that every fan wants to see their team lift.

“Regardless of how many years I have on my contract, the ultimate goal is that this club needs to win a Grand Final because of the squad and resources it has.

“As a club we want to win as much silverware as possible and hopefully we can pick up a few more trophies.”

Ratchford could also be set to spend the rest of his career at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

He said: “We’ll see what happens when this deal is up and go from there but I’d have no problem staying at the club for the rest of my career.

“I love the club and everything that the club is doing.

“The fans have always been brilliant with me, and they’re always brilliant regardless of results.

“Obviously earlier on in the year we weren’t brilliant but the fans stuck by us and we’ve started picking up a few results and slowly getting up the table.

“Everyone at the club from the groundsman to the caterers are great people – I love everyone there and hopefully everyone loves me.”
