BRAD Dwyer admits his impact on games has been reduced this year but says his recent starts have boosted his confidence.

The hooker has appeared in every game this year, mostly from the interchanges, but has started two of The Wire’s past three games.

With regular starting hooker Daryl Clark being injured and suspended in recent weeks, Dwyer says he is pleased to have got the chance to play longer minutes.

However, the 24-year-old acknowledges he needs to be making more of an impression when he is on the field.

“You always want to get a chance to start games. I’m pretty pleased with the minutes I’ve been able to do,” he said.

“It’s helped me prove to myself that I am capable of pushing on and doing some longer stints.

“It’s something I’d like to do more often, it will be difficult to do behind Daz but I’ve got to be looking at it.

“I’ve worked on quite a few things after last year and I’m pleased with how they’ve developed. I’ve worked on my defence and being a bit more controlled around the ruck.

“I wouldn’t say I’m having as much of an impact as I have in the past.

“That’s probably down to working on other sides of my game but it’s something I know I’ve got to get back.

“I want to have more impact and influence on the game but I think I’m defending better than I ever have.”

Having made his debut for the club in 2012, Dwyer is one of several Wolves players whose contract is due to expire at the end of the current season.

However, the hooker says he is not thinking about his future.

“I’m just taking it week by week, like we have been as a team,” he said.

“We’ve not had the ideal start but the way we’ve reacted recently has been good.

“We’ve just been taking each game as it comes and that’s the way it’s got to carry on for the rest of the year.”

Dwyer has helped Wolves embark on a four-match winning run, the longest current unbeaten streak in Super League.

Despite their improved form, performances remain patchy and errors continue to punctuate The Wire’s play, particularly at the play-the-ball.

Fans’ frustration at their team’s fundamental mistakes was evident in parts during Saturday’s 22-20 victory over Wakefield, but Dwyer moved to assure them that he and his teammates are fully focused on tidying up their play, starting with the trip to Hull FC tomorrow, Friday.

“Not much has changed because we’re still turning a lot of ball over and making errors, but what has changed is coming out on the right side of close games,” he said.

“That’s not hidden what we need to do, we can’t keep turning the ball over so cheaply.

“It’s frustrating for everyone, if only because of the work it’s forcing us to do in defence. It’s taking quite a bit out of our tank each week.

“Sometimes we’re coming in at half time 20-25 plays behind the opposition which is just massive.

“It means there’s not as much energy in our attack as well but we’re focusing on trying to clean it up.

“Other than Catalans at the very start, we haven’t really travelled this year so it’s going to be a tough trip on Friday.”
