WARRINGTON'S Kathleen Dawson has been selected on the Great Britain swim team for the FINA World Championships in Hungary this summer.

The 19-year-old multiple Scottish record holder, currently studying at the University of Stirling, will join former Newman High School pupil James Guy in the 29-strong squad in Budapest in July.

Dawson, a Warriors of Warrington product, is one of six to have been chosen for potential after consistent high performance, rather than for having met qualification or 'consideration' times.

She won silver medals in both the 50m and 100m backstroke finals at the British Championships in Sheffield last week, missing out on gold in both to Olympian Georgia Davies from Loughborough.

Guy, now a member of the National Centre Bath team but a previous Warrington Junior Sports Personality of the Year winner, collected four titles in Sheffield.

Bill Furniss, British Swimming head coach, said: “We’ve got all of our top swimmers there along with an exciting group of juniors that came through and showed themselves and their potential to achieve within the international arena.

“We’ve already got one eye on Tokyo (2020 Olympics) and therefore we want to introduce that next generation of elite swimmers to world class arenas.

"They did a good job in putting themselves forward but now the work starts again as we build towards the World Championships in Budapest in July.”

Kirkcaldy-born Dawson's performances in Sheffield have also put her in the reckoning for the Scotland squad for next year’s Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast. She was the youngest member of the Scottish squad at the 2014 event.

Last year Dawson, guided to the top by Warriors head coach Darren Ashley, became the first Scottish woman to go under the one-minute mark in the 100m backstroke and has broken scottish records in all three backstroke events.

She represented Great Britain for the first time at a senior international meet in last year's European Championships, recording 59.68secs to win bronze in the 100m backstroke.

And she helped Great Britain to a gold with her lead-off leg in the 400m medley relay.
