WOLVES boss Tony Smith praised the character of his players in their 22-20 win over Wakefield, but stressed there was still plenty of work to do.

Tom Lineham’s 79th-minute try ensured Wolves recorded their fourth Super League win in a row against opponents that led from the eighth minute.

Ashley Gibson and Mason Caton-Brown gave Wakefield an early advantage, with Ryan Atkins getting The Wire on the board before Liam Finn’s penalty gave the visitors a two-score lead at the break.

Tom Johnstone crossed to give Chris Chester’s side a comfortable advantage, but Chris Hill and Kevin Brown set up a grandstand finish before Lineham’s dramatic intervention.

“Our character isn't in question at all. Some of our processes are but our players are trying hard,” Smith said.

"There were a few errors when they're getting up to play the ball. We need to get that right because it's hurting us.

"It comes from trying to play it quick but we showed great character.

"We felt if we held the lion share of the ball, we would score points.

"Wakefield are dangerous and a good attacking team, they showed that.

“We never lost doubt about the result of the game but I'd like us to have taken a little more control.

"I felt for Wakefield by the end but we should have been in front earlier.

"We told the boys at half time to take more care but we made a mistake in our first set.

"That was a fourth game in two weeks for some of them. I can't be too critical of them.”

Smith was full of praise for the efforts of some of his players in what was their third game in nine days over the Easter period.

The Wire boss says the most important thing was coming through the busy period with maximum points ahead of a trip to Hull FC on Friday.

“There were some big efforts, Hilly was outstanding and Benjamin Jullien put in an enormous effort,” he said.

"That was Andre Savelio's best game for us, he ran direct and strong. He did a great job for us off the bench.

"We had two kids, Andre and Harvey Livett, that we going to play in reserve grade last night but had to play today. We're patching ourselves up.

"We're grateful to get through this patch with maximum points.

“I'd love to say it was a brilliant game but I've got players out there that probably should have come off but they kept going.

"We'll roll our sleeves up because we've another game coming up.”
