WOLVES boss Tony Smith wants his four returning players to give his side more energy in Saturday’s clash with Wakefield Trinity, kick off 3pm.

Ryan Atkins, Kevin Brown, Matty Russell and Joe Westerman are all set to come back into the Wire squad for the game at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Atkins, Brown and Russell have all been sidelined with head injuries, while Westerman has been nursing a neck problem.

Smith confirmed all four would be involved against Chris Chester’s side and hopes the new blood will refresh his team after the gruelling Easter schedule.

Wolves won both games over Easter, beating Widnes 19-10 on Thursday before a 26-24 victory over Huddersfield Giants on Monday, and Smith is wary of fatigue setting in.

“With some of the more experienced players returning this week, we’re looking for an energetic input from them,” he said.

“We’re trying our best to freshen them up but they look fairly good physically. They’re not carrying too many bumps but fatigue is always an issue.

“We trained on Wednesday but were still only two days out from the previous game, with a lot of them playing five days before that as well.

“It’s a tough ask for them and it’s a tough sport to play and recover from.

“We just want some energy by Saturday but they will be bouncing on Friday and ready to go.”

The return of a quartet of players is timely for The Wire as three more players will miss Saturday’s game.

Centre Toby King suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury in training so Rhys Evans will move inside from the right wing to take his place, allowing Russell to slot back in on the right wing.

Westerman will play at loose forward as a direct replacement for Mike Cooper, who suffered a head injury against Huddersfield and is ruled out under the RFL’s concussion guidelines.

Brad Dwyer and Kurt Gidley will alternate dummy-half duties after Daryl Clark was handed a one-match ban for a high tackle on Giants half-back Lee Gaskell.

The nature of England stand-off Brown’s return has not yet been decided but Smith did confirm he would be in his matchday squad.

The Wire’s head of coaching and rugby has also called on his side to control the ball against Chris Chester’s side to prevent them from using their “genuine speed.”

Smith said: “I consider them to be a very good team. They will test us when they have the ball as They’ve got some really good attacking players.

“We need to control the ball this week. If we give them too much ball, they’ll score points because that’s the kind of team they are.

“When they’ve got the ball in hand, they’re very good and they’ve got genuine speed.

“I’ve enjoyed watching some of their play but I don’t want to enjoy it on Saturday.”
