HOMEGROWN talent has helped steer Warrington Wolves Handball Club men’s team to title success for the second time in three years.

Seven squad members Stephen Clarke, Liam Welsby, Jacob Maxted, Evan Nichol, Alex Bradley, Rafik Tahraoui and Nik Tan all came through the system of a club which is a part of the Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation.

Not only are they and their teammates celebrating Super 8 champions success after a hard-fought win over title rivals North East Manchester Hawks at the weekend, but are now looking forward to defending the English National Cup and competing in the European Handball qualifiers.

Wolves amalgamated with Salford Handball Club in 2015 and currently play matches outside of the town, though they are in talks with leisure providers Livewire about the prospects of a full-size court being available in Warrington.

Wolves head coach Bill Baillie said: “This season we set out to be competitive but we quickly realised that this squad had developed following their cup final win last May.

“We are delighted to have secured the title with two games to go but now our focus switches to the defence of the cup where we are going for our fifth win in a row.”

The next couple of weeks are an important period for the club, having secured the Under 16s Northwest Championship last month while the under 18s boys and girls squads play their semi finals this weekend.

The men will also be in semi-final action on Saturday in a repeat of last year’s final against London GD. Throw off is at 1.30pm at the Powerleague Soccerdome in Trafford.
