Warrington Town 1 Hednesford Town 0

TONY McMillan was Warrington’s hero as his penalty save earned them a fifth straight league victory to leave their play-off hopes in their own hands.

Despite dominating much of the game, Yellows could not add to Mitch Duggan’s first-half goal and conceded a spot kick with just one minute remaining.

However, McMillan was able to keep out Danny Glover’s penalty to earn Paul Carden’s side a victory.

Carden gave new signings Scott Bakkor and Kurt Sherlock their home debuts and the latter nearly made an immediate impact, sending a dipping volley goalwards and forcing keeper Dan Crane into a save.

Billy Smart then had a close range effort blocked before Town hit the front in spectacular style.

Sean Williams laid the ball off for Duggan and the full-back let fly from 30 yards. Crane got a hand to his shot but could not prevent it from finding the bottom corner.

Williams then had a free-kick pushed away by Crane and Jay McCarten had a header from a corner cleared off the line as Yellows could not extend their lead before the break.

Warrington continued to dominate in the second half, with the lively Bakkor forcing Crane into another save.

Josh Askew then hit a shot into the side netting before Dan Hattersley could only fire over the bar after being found by Smart’s knockdown.

Two substitutes then combined as Dylan Vassallo found Michael Monaghan, but he shot wide with only Crane to beat.

Yellows were almost made to pay for their profligacy when Evan Gumbs, who had earlier been fortunate to escape a red card for kicking out at George Washbourne in an ugly exchange, brought down Tony Clarke in the area.

Glover stepped up, but McMillan flung himself to his right to save the spot-kick.
