WOLVES must be wary of a “back to his best” James Roby when they take on St Helens tomorrow, Friday, boss Tony Smith says.

Saints have two wins and three defeats from their five Super League games so far but come into the game riding high after a 28-24 victory at Catalans Dragons on Saturday.

Roby’s speed and intelligence around the ruck has been prominent so far in 2017 in making 43 runs from dummy-half. Only Leeds hooker Matt Parcell, 47, has made more in the competition.

Smith says Wolves will have to keep an eye on the 31-year-old and says Keiron Cunningham’s side have been showing dangerous signs in the past few weeks.

“They’ve got areas they are really strong in, James Roby is getting back to his best in terms of the form he is showing,” he said.

“Last year maybe wasn’t his strongest but he’s getting back to the sort of performances for which we really got to know him.

“He’ll be a danger and they’ve got a big pack of forwards that we’ll have to muscle up against.

“I thought their game at Catalans was one of the better games of Super League I’ve seen this year. Both teams looked good in terms of performance.

“They played well against Hull the week before as well so they’ve been strong in the past few weeks.”

Warrington do have a good record at the Totally Wicked Stadium, winning on six of their seven visits since St Helens moved there in 2012.

However, Smith says Wolves cannot rely on past triumphs to get them through Friday’s clash.

“It doesn’t matter where we’re playing. We could have been playing on the moon this week but we’d still need to play well,” he said.

“We’re not going to rely on any past outings to influence us, it’s what we do this week that counts.

“It’s important for us to get out and do a good job and we have every intention of doing that.

“We’re up against good opponents that we have to respect, but where it’s being played makes very little difference to us.”
