Warrington 16 Burnage 36

WARRINGTON’S chances of silverware this season came to an end on Saturday when a muscular Burnage side powered to victory in their Lancashire Cup semi final.

A few exceptions aside, Burnage were around two stone heavier per man than their hosts and they used that advantage immediately to drive up the field.

After a line-out and driving maul brought them close to the line, the visitors spun the ball wide for an early try in the corner.

Luke Gilooly kicked two penalties either side of another Burnage try in the corner to keep Warrington in touch at 10-6 down.

However, Andy Roberts’ side finally got over the line before the break when Jack Hannon jinked through to score between the posts.

Another Gilooly penalty gave Warrington a 16-10 lead at the break, but that was as good as it got for the hosts.

Within five minutes of the restart, Burnage had re-taken the lead from another driving maul try and added three more tries before the end to secure their place in the final.

“Burnage stuck to their game plan and made the most of their weight advantage,” head coach Roberts said.

“Although the lads defended well in the first half, I think the tackle count was draining in the end.

“This probably contributed to our turning over too much possession.”

Warrington now turn their attentions to finishing their North One West campaign as well as possible but face a tough trip to third-placed Wilmslow on Saturday, kick off 3pm.
