CHESHIRE Wire Basketball Club have acquired the services of a new coach – thanks to the Warrington Guardian.

American Patrick Gottlieb spotted coverage of Cheshire Wire on our sports pages, and made contact with the club based at Birchwood Tennis and Leisure Complex.

Gottlieb, from Pasadena in Los Angeles, can count on league championship success during his time in the sport and is considered by the club’s chiefs as a valuable addition to their coaching programme.

A sports journalism student at Chester University, he witnessed success at the weekend with the Cheshire Wire’ s Green under 14s squad in National League North West One.

In a return match at home to Liverpool, who had recently beaten formidable opponents in the form of Manchester Giants, they secured a 60-48 win.

That was achieved despite having only eight players available.

However they achieved a positive outcome largely due to cohesive team play and a determination to continue to succeed after a return to winning ways the previous week.

Although Liverpool clawed back to within six points in the third quarter, the hosts regained their composure and tactical skill to extend the lead at the end of an entertaining contest.

Meanwhile Cheshire Wire under 18s I were defeated 83-60 by Liverpool in their biggest game of the season so far on Sunday.

After starting the first quarter full of energy, they managed to take an early lead in a potentially title-deciding clash.

However it proved not to be enough.

After key players suffered injuries, while others got into foul trouble, Liverpool began to build a lead that proved to be decisive.

The Warrington boys will aim to take revenge when the rivals meet again later in the season.

Cheshire Wire went into that clash on the back of a 94-44 victory over the club’s second team following an intense battle.
