A SUPERB showcase for female boxing was a feature of the season’s second Phoenix Fire show on Friday.

The performance of youth boxer Courtney Swanton, who fights in the 54kg category, was a highlight of the evening as she contested the National Association of Boys and Girls National Championship Final.

The 17-year-old faced tough opposition in Birmingham’s Ceri-Anne O’Dell, who started the bout stronger before Swanton came into her own in the later stages of a four-round contest.

The Birmingham fighter was awarded the judges’ decision in a fight that captivated the capacity crowd at Eagle Sports Club.

Swanton was one of 11 Phoenix boxers to feature on the 12-fight card, with elite flyweight Imad Nasseb making a successful defence of his Northern title with a split decision victory over Moss Side’s Liam Phillips.

Despite his opponent being the main aggressor, Nasseb’s counter-punching and footwork caught the eye of the judges.

Two more of the club’s elite fighters were in action, with lightweight Bayode Oluieye and light-welterweight Courtney Chadwick both earning split decision victories.

The Boxer of the Evening trophy went to 11-year-old Recardo Jenkins, who showcased good skills throughout to defeat Anfield’s Cain Alexander via a unanimous points decision.

Luke Turner, aged 13, kept his unbeaten run going in the 44kg category with a split decision victory over Eastburn’s Max Robinson.

Despite giving away a height advantage, Turner kept the pressure on to earn a hard-fought decision.

The club’s next event will be their 25th anniversary show, which takes place on Saturday, February 11 at Parr Hall.
