Lymm 54 Doncaster Phoenix 14

FACED with the test of newly-promoted Doncaster Phoenix on Saturday, Lymm proved too hot for the National League Three North new boys to handle at Beechwood.

Both sides took time to adjust to the windy conditions, with the visitors’ ability at the scrum forcing Lymm onto the back foot.

However, it was the hosts who opened the scoring when Richard McEvoy broke and timed his pass well for Cormac Nolan to score and add the conversion himself.

Doncaster responded quickly with a try from a driving maul, but Nolan added a penalty to give Lymm more comfort before the visitors moved back to within two points with a penalty kick of their own.

Just before the break, scrum-half Tom Baker showed his awareness to burrow over after a line-out and the sides traded penalties to ensure Lymm turned around with a 20-11 advantage.

The visitors kicked another goal to narrow the gap further, but that was as good as it got as Lymm flexed their muscles.

Chris Owens crossed after his forwards won a penalty line-out caused by a superb break from Ollie Higginson from deep inside his own half.

The confidence was flowing through the hosts and their pattern of play was too much for the visitors to handle.

They were soon over the line again as Higginson broke the line once more and shifted the ball to Nolan for his second try.

From the restart, skipper Adam Bray broke upfield and his side stole the resulting line-out to give Baker another score.

By now, the visitors were in danger of crumbling and Lymm took full advantage with three more tries.

Owens grabbed his second before Higginson capped an excellent display in the centres with a try of his own.

With the clock ticking down, McEvoy had the final word by finishing off a number of phases to get himself on the scoresheet.

The result puts Adam Fletcher’s side second in the National League Three North table with three wins from their first four games, one point behind leaders Huddersfield.

Lymm are on the road this weekend as they travel to Kendal on Saturday, kick off 3pm.
