WINNING the League Leaders’ Shield would be “a step in the right direction” for Wolves, first-team coach Richard Agar says.

The Wire go into battle with Wigan Warriors at The Halliwell Jones Stadium tomorrow, Friday, kick off 8pm, knowing victory will secure their first silverware since 2012.

Home advantage in the semi finals is also on offer and Agar says the players are keen to get the job done.

He also says being in such a position is testament to the team’s resilience in responding to last month’s devastating Challenge Cup Final defeat.

“It shows you’ve had a consistent year, being first past the post is still a superb achievement,” he said.

“The financial rewards aren’t perhaps where they used to be but it would still be brilliant for the squad to finish 30 rounds on top.

“It’s a step in the right direction and it’s a good testament to the character of the squad if it happens because Wembley was a crushing blow and we’ve quickly moved on.

“There’s plenty of football to play though and we’re all gunning for the big prize at the end of it.

“It would be great if we could get the job done on Friday. If not, it would be similar to last year when it goes to the last game of the season with nobody really knowing the exact make-up of the four.”

Wolves will be able to call on hooker Daryl Clark and loose forward Joe Westerman for the clash with Shaun Wane’s side.

Both have been sidelined with minor calf strains, the same injury that keeps Ryan Bailey out of the squad. Teenager Morgan Smith is the other player to drop out of contention.

Agar also confirmed scrum-half Chris Sandow is recovering “exceptionally well” from his medial knee ligament injury and could feature in next week’s game against Hull FC.

He also provided an update on Ben Westwood following a successful operation.

“Chris is coming on great, he seems to be an exceptionally quick healer if the injuries he’s suffered here are anything to go by,” he said.

“This week will be too soon for him, he’ll possibly be back next week.

“Ben’s had surgery on his shoulder and pectoral muscle so he’s in a fair bit of discomfort.

“The surgery was a success. Although it will be a lengthy rehabilitation period for him we’ll expect him back for the start of next year so he won’t be in a position for off-season football for England.”
