WARRINGTON Rowing Club are hoping to capitalise on Olympic fever currently sweeping the nation by getting more people involved with the sport.

They plan to host a taster session this Saturday, August 27, in an effort to get more people interested in rowing.

It coincides with a nationwide I Am Team GB initiative aimed at encouraging the public to get into sport after Great Britain’s most successful overseas Olympics in history.

Rowing was one of the more successful sports for Team GB, yielding five medals including three golds.

Only cycling celebrated more wins.

Gill Laidlaw, ladies’ vice-captain at the Howley Lane club, said everyone involved is delighted to be taking part.

“We are so excited to be putting on this event and be part of I Am Team GB,” she said.

“Sport brings communities closer together, and we’re immensely proud at Warrington Rowing Club to be part of this nationwide celebration of sport.”

The session starts at 1pm, and people of all ages are encouraged to come along and learn the basics of a rowing stroke before putting it into practice in a rowing boat on the River Mersey.

Younger visitors to the club may be hoping to emulate the achievements of current member Lucy Glover, who has enjoyed a successful start to the World Junior Championships in Rotterdam.

The 17-year-old, who attends Lymm High School Sixth Form, is part of a Great Britain crew that won their heat in the women’s quad on Wednesday morning.

They progress directly to the semi finals, scheduled for Saturday afternoon, as a reward.

The final follows on Sunday.
