WOLVES second rower Jack Hughes is hoping to put previous Challenge Cup Final disappointments behind him at Wembley on Saturday.

The 24-year-old started his career at Wigan and was part of their squad for the 2013 final, also against today’s opponents Hull FC.

However, Hughes was forced to watch from the sidelines as his side won 16-0 to lift the trophy.

“I was 18th man in the 2013 final. I took part in the whole experience but didn’t get to play which was tough,” he said.

“It was a hard conversation to have but at the same time I knew my place in the team.

“I was young and I told myself my time would come again and now it has. I’m ready for my chance now.”

The former England Knights international has been in stellar form, including scoring the winning try in Saturday’s 14-11 win over Castleford.

Hughes crossed in the last minute to secure Wolves’ place in the semi finals of Super League.

He said: “It was nice to get the winning try although it came a bit too late for my liking because we wanted to win more comfortably, but things like that are always nice when they happen to you.

“It wasn’t the performance we wanted to put out before Wembley but what we can take from it is the desire and the character we showed when losing late on to get the ball back and win the game.”

When Hughes received the ball with a three-on-one overlap, trailing by a point and time running out, he had only one thing on his mind.

“I was never going to pass the ball on,” he said.

“In most cases like that the opposition winger goes for the interception so as soon as I got the ball I knew I was going to show-and-go and just get that ball down.”

Recent personal successes for Hughes also include a man-of-the-match display in the Challenge Cup semi-final win over Wakefield and his performances have seen him rewarded with a new contract.

While he is pleased with how things are going, the former Huddersfield man says personal accolades will not drive him on in the build-up to Saturday’s final.

He said: “The semi final was one of my best performances this season, quite a few things came off for me. I managed to set up a couple of tries and get one myself so that always looks good.

“This week isn’t about individual honours for me, it’s about doing the one per cent stuff, the things the fans and media don’t always see.

“If we all do those things, if every member of the team does their job right I know we’ll be victorious.”

While stressing he is confident of a Wolves victory under the Wembley arch, he acknowledges they face a stiff task against the Black and Whites.

One of their chief threats will be prop forward Scott Taylor, but Hughes has a plan in store for his former Wigan teammate.

“I might give Scott a text in the run-up to the game and try to get in his head a bit,” he joked.

“Scott is a good lad, it’s good to see his move to Hull is going well and people are speaking about him highly. I’m looking forward to playing against him and hopefully getting one over on him.

“We’re both physical teams through the middle, they probably focus a bit more on the power game whereas we carry a bit more speed round the ruck.

“It’s going to come down to which team puts their advantage into the game the most.”
