WOLVES boss Tony Smith says defence will be key to his side beating Hull FC to lift the Challenge Cup on Saturday.

The Wire boast Super League’s best defence and attack in terms of points conceded and scored, but it is Lee Radford’s side who top the table heading into the Wembley showdown.

Smith has stuck with the same starting line-up for the past five games and says it is a team geared towards stopping the opposition from scoring.

“We feel like continuity is important,” he said.

“Our defence has been pretty sound for the past few weeks and that’s probably been the telling factor.

“We’re trying to go with a strong defensive team, and to only allow one try last weekend against one of the better attacking teams in the competition was very pleasing.

“We’ve got to have a good defensive team but at the same time we’ve got plenty of players that can score points as well.”

The sides have met twice in Super League so far this year and the Black and Whites have come out victorious on both occasions.

Smith hopes Saturday’s spectacle will be much better than those two games.

“We want to put on a great spectacle for what is the showcase for the game of rugby league,” he said.

“I’m hopeful for different conditions. Both times we’ve played them the weather has been atrocious and wet.

“Marc Sneyd’s kicking game was probably the difference in those two games but they are a formidable team.

“We’re hoping the weather is a bit dryer and both teams can show their attacking prowess rather than just their kicking game and defensive efforts.”
