JUST like the first team on Saturday, Wolves under 19s secured a late winning try against Catalans Dragons in their first appearance at The Halliwell Jones Stadium this year.
Harvey Livett shot between the posts with six minutes remaining in the Super 8s curtain-raiser to take Lee Briers’ side up to seventh in the academy standings with a 36-32 win.
The French visitors, who slipped from third to fourth, have proved to be a tough nut to crack this year and The Wire boys showed in their celebrations at the end their delight in taking the scalp.
It was a thrilling finish to a seesaw encounter.
Stand off Morgan Smith, on his return from a successful England Academy tour of Australia, helped the team establish a first-half lead, as tries from Jack Fox, Nathan Ainsworth and Charlie Phythian along with three of Livett’s six conversions put the hosts 18-16 ahead.
At the 60-minute mark Wolves led 30-26, with further converted tries having come from Jack Roper and Declan Kay.
Catalans drew level with a try from scrum half Romain Pallares and Alexandre Mickalezyk’s conversion made it a two-point ball-game going into the final stages.
Wolves will next be in action in their final home game of the season against Leeds Rhinos at Victoria Park Stadium on Friday, September 2, kick off 7pm.
