FORMER Newman High School pupil James Guy bagged a bronze medal at the European Swimming Championships in London yesterday.

The 20-year-old, who lived in Stockton Heath before relocating to Somerset to receive specialist swimming coaching in 2008, took third place in the 200m freestyle behind the eventual winner, Dutchman Sebastiaan Verschuren, and Serbian silver medallist Velimir Stjepanovic.

This comes after he took gold in the same event at last year’s World Championships in Russia as well as being part of the winning Great Britain team in the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Guy, who won the Warrington Under-11 Sports Personality of the Year award in 2007, missed out on the 400m freestyle final but has already secured selection for the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio.
