WOLVES icon Ben Westwood says he “can’t see himself anywhere else” after penning a new deal with the club.

The veteran forward, who joined the Wire from Wakefield way back in 2002, has signed a one-year contract which ties him to the Halliwell Jones Stadium until the end of 2017.

The 34-year-old hopes to end his career with Wolves, but says that may not be for a while yet.

“It’s been a different one for me as I’ve never really gone into a season in the last year of my deal, obviously as you crack on in age you have to wait for deals but I’m happy it’s all done.

“I feel as though I’ve got at least another year left in me so we were both happy to agree another deal and I hope to be here when I end my career as I can’t see myself being anywhere else.”

Westwood played for England alongside the likes of Adrian Morley and Jamie Peacock, who both played into their late thirties and “Super Bennie” remained coy on his chances of matching their feats.

“Who knows? Hopefully this time next year we’ll be discussing a new deal again but we’ll see how the body’s coping,” he said.

“I’ll just take it a year at a time, I’m enjoying myself, training better than I think I’ve ever trained and my body is feeling OK at the minute.”

The fan favourite has played stints in every position in the pack this season as well as occasionally coming off the bench.

Whilst admitting his change in role has been a challenge, he says it’s one he’s relishing.

“My game’s changing a lot at the minute, we’ve got some young players coming through and I’ve been moving up into the front row and coming off the bench as well,” he said.

“It’s been different but I’ve been enjoying coming off the bench over the last few weeks, maybe that’s part of my new game but I’ll be able to slip back into the back row when needed.

“It’s a new challenge playing different positions each week but it’s one I’m enjoying so long may it continue.”

Ahead of Saturday’s Magic Weekend clash with Castleford Tigers, Wolves are top of Super League on points difference and Westwood says the current crop have all the tools to end Warrington’s 61-year wait for a league title.

“We’ve got the players and we’ve got the backing behind us, everything you need to win a comp,” he said.

“It takes a lot of hard work but we’re doing that, we’re in a good place at the minute.

“I don’t want to think too far ahead but we’re doing things right at the moment and we’ll take it week by week and see where we are come the end of the season.”

Rugby is not the only sport the 25-cap England international has been enjoying this season, he has also had a successful start to the golfing year at Birchwood Golf Club.

His handicap has come down to 16 following a competition win and he says he’s enjoying getting out on the course.

“Birchwood were kind enough to take me on as a member, I thought I’d have a real dig at it this year,” he said.

“I didn’t have much of a dig last year as I was playing here, there and everywhere but I’ve managed to win a few already this year, the handicap’s coming down pretty quick.”
