WOLVES head coach Tony Smith has called on his players to tap into the special Magic Weekend atmosphere this weekend.

The Wire have won six and lost three of their Magic Weekend outings, including last year’s 20-16 defeat to St Helens.

The latest estimates are for a record-high attendance and Smith says playing in front of such a big crowd is “a privilege”.

“Big crowds usually bring out the best in players, it’s a good experience for the young guys and it will add to the experience of some of the older boys,” he said.

“Kurt Gidley won’t have played there before and I’m sure he’ll enjoy the atmosphere along with some of the younger boys.

“To play in front of big crowds like that is a really privilege, it’s still the same game but atmosphere can really lift individuals and the game itself so I want the guys to tap into that special occasion.”

The Wire faithful are expected to travel up to Tyneside in numbers on Saturday and Smith is calling on them to make it “like a home game” for the team.

“I know they will get right behind our team and lift us up this week when we need it,” he said.

“They will make it feel like a home game like they do whenever we travel and I’m really grateful for their support.”

Daryl Powell’s side picked up an impressive 52-12 win at Leeds last time out and Smith says they cannot afford to be “lenient” with the Tigers.

“They’ve got some dangerous players so we’ll have to be right on our game, we were off our game defensively last week,” he said.

“We won’t be able to give Cas the sort of leniency that we gave Wakefield last week, we’ve got some areas that we need to tighten up on so it’s a good opportunity for us to do that.”
