A WET weekend saw much the town’s cricket abandoned without a ball being bowled, but Grappenhall’s seconds bucked the trend when their game on Saturday went ahead.

While they managed to survive a pre-match hail shower, they could not live with visitors Cheadle Hulme who went home as comfortable seven-wicket victors.

It started well enough for the hosts, despite losing the toss and being put into bat, as they managed to post a respectable 195-2 from their 50 overs.

After openers Tom Hulme and James Jenkinson went for 20 and 21 respectively, Grappers’ skipper Jack Critchley led the way with an unbeaten 72.

He was ably-supported by Arthur Pennington, who was also unbeaten on 62 as the hosts set a competitive target.

Their bowlers started well too, keeping the run-rate down but crucially they did not take arly wickets they needed.

As a result, the visitors loosened the shackles and 69 from opener George Balderson set them on course for victory.

Ben Magna took two wickets for Grappenhall, but an unbeaten 57 from Alex Read saw Cheadle Hulme over the line with just over three overs to spare.

WARRINGTON’S thirds also managed to get their game at Chester on, scoring a dominant 94-run win.

Allister Begg top-scored with 49 as the visitors amassed an impressive 205-5, before 4-22 from Billy Gilbert helped skittle Chester for just 111 in reply.

They host Stretton on Saturday.
