WOLVES will take Championship outfit Oldham Roughyeds “as seriously as anyone else” in their Challenge Cup sixth round clash on Saturday, head coach Tony Smith says.

Smith’s men travel to Bower Fold in Stalybridge this weekend to face a side that have been the story of the competition so far after knocking out last year’s runners-up Hull KR in the last round.

Scott Naylor’s men have also been in impressive league form of late, winning three of their last four games, and Smith says he feels well prepared for the task at hand.

“We’ve watched five games of theirs, including the Hull KR game, and they are an impressive side,” he said.

“They are on a very good run and have knocked off some good teams in recent weeks, like Sheffield and Featherstone.

“They’ll be on a wave of confidence with that plus the Hull KR result but we feel we have a fairly comprehensive idea of how they might play and we’ll take it as seriously as any other game.”

Another test for Wolves will be the surroundings as they swap the grander stadia they are used to for the much more humble Bower Fold.

Oldham’s 6,500-capacity home, which also houses Stalybridge Celtic Football Club, will be a far cry from what many of the Wolves players are used to and Smith says it could work in the hosts’ favour.

“It’s a very small pitch at their place and it probably suits the way they play,” he said.

“We have to be prepared for that. We all know what happened to Hull KR so we have to make sure we take it seriously but I know we will.”
