JUNIOR players from Woolston Rovers turned the Halliwell Jones Stadium green and gold ahead of Warrington Wolves’ clash with Wigan last Thursday night.

Over 500 members were in attendance as Rovers celebrated their “Community Day” in fine style.

The pre-match entertainment saw Woolston Rovers Under-7s Newbies, Under-7s, Under-8s Greens and Under-8s Golds showcase the talent on offer in the club’s junior section.

The mascots for Warrington were supplied by the Cubs (4-6 year olds) while the Wigan mascots were from the Under-7s Newbies and Under-7s.

Players from the Under-8 through to the Under-11 age group then took centre stage as flag bearers when the teams emerged onto the field.

The Under-14s also had their role to play, acting as bucket collectors with help from the Under-10s, Under-12s and Under-13s.

Rovers’ public relations officer, Dave Whalley, says the evening shows they are “doing something right” as a club.

“To see so many of our clubs youngsters performing at the Halliwell Jones Stadium before the biggest game of the Super League season so far was so pleasing for us and it really did demonstrate how far we have come as a club over the past few years,” he said.

“We now have eighteen teams playing in the green & gold, from Cubs through to Open Age with several age groups having two teams, and there are more youngsters coming to join our ranks every week.

“This goes to show that we are doing something right and we are only going to get better in the next few months and years.

“The number of tickets that we sold at the club for the game was outstanding and I know that influential people at the Wolves were absolutely delighted.”
