WOLVES stand-off Kurt Gidley has become the latest to commit his future to the club by signing a new contract.

The veteran Australian, who joined Wire in the off-season after a long and storied NRL career with the Newcastle Knights, has signed a 12-month extension to his original deal, keeping him at the Halliwell Jones Stadium until the end of next year.

The 33-year-old, who has also played representative rugby for New South Wales and Australia, says the advice given to him by other Australian imports before moving to the club has been vindicated.

“I spoke to the likes of Matt King, Joel Monaghan and Andrew Johns about coming to Warrington and they all spoke really well about the place,” he said.

““I wanted to come to place where I can contribute to winning things and there’s certainly a good chance of that here,” he said.

“The plan was always to spend at least two years here but it’s nice to get it out of the way early on in the season.

“I’m really enjoying my footy and my family are enjoying life here so it was an easy decision to make.”

Gidley has made ten appearances for the club to date, crossing for three tries and kicking 39 goals as well as forming successful partnerships with first Chris Sandow and now Stefan Ratchford in the halves.

Head coach Tony Smith, who also signed extended terms during the week, has welcomed the news and praised Gidley’s impact on the rest of the players.

“I’ve been delighted with his commitment to the club; he’s already shown his experience, knowledge and temperament,” he said.

“He’s really made the club his home and he’s been a big contributor for us already and I’m really pleased he’s signed.

“When players settle as quickly as he has it makes it easy to look at the future and I’m pleased to say he’s going to be here for another year after this.”
