WINWICK Chess Club will be representing Great Britain on Friday as they take on one of the best known clubs in the world during an internet chess match.

A team from New York will be flying the star spangled banner representing the USA in the contest which will take place over the next few weeks.

Six players from each club will be competing against each other in the hope of recreating the 'Match of the century'.

Nigel Holland, from match sponsor Holland and Co Accountants and team captain, said: "This is going to be an extremely difficult match for Great Britain because the New York Club is one of the most well known in the world.

"It is where the 'Match of the century' took place between Bobby Fischer and Donald Byrne.

"At the time Bobby Fischer was an unknown 13 year old and Donald Byrne was a college professor, an International Master, former US Open Champion, and a fiercely aggressive player.

"Fischer won the match and in many peoples' eyes then went onto become the greatest chess player of all time.

"It's going to be an awesome competition and I believe that if we play at our best we are in with a chance of a victory."

The first match in the international tournament takes place on Friday at 5.30pm.

Winwick Chess Club meet every Tuesday at 7.30 pm at Winwick Leisure Centre on Myddleton Lane.
