PHOENIX Fire under 19s boxers competed in the Totana Box Cup in Spain.

Their team of six won two gold medals, one silver and a bronze.

Coaches who attended the event, Mark Simmons, Peter Aramayo and Alan Brown, were very proud of the Phoenix boxers' efforts.

Aramayo explained that all of Phoenix's boxers were in the lower age group of an event for boxers between 16-18.

He added: "Boxers from seven countries attended and our boxers all did particularly well and all boxed opponents much older and experienced.

"This event was a great learning experience for the boys and we have already been invited back next year.

"This team will return with also 2 or 3 more athletes whom didn't qualify this year as they were too young. We are developing a strong crop of athletes for future years."

Jamie Aramayo defeated Alfonso Ignacio, the National Spanish U19 champion, to claim gold in the 81kg category on the final day.

A dominant performance saw him claim two of the three rounds clearly, by using fast movement and good quality rear hands to score cleanly throughout the bout and claim a points decision.

Bradley Rea from St Johns in Manchester, guesting for the team, also claimed gold at 64kgs when his opponent failed to appear at ringside. Brad had won his semi-final against the Spanish champion, with the referee intervening in the second round the previous day.

Casey Brown won silver at 69kgs after two clear points wins in the quarter and semi finals against opponents from Shepton Mallet and Burnley.

He faced seven-times Irish National Champion Lewis Crocker, with more than 250 bouts under his belt and 22 months his senior.

Brown boxed well against Crocker, who had defeated both his previous opponents in the tournament within 25 seconds, but due to the maturity and experience of his opponent the Phoenix pugilist was withdrawn shortly before the end of the second round.

Imad Nasseb lost his 52kg bronze medal box-off on points to a French opponent. He had boxed very well to secure a unanimous points decision against Spanish opponent Miguel Herrera.

Bayode Olueye was unfortunate on day one when after appearing to dominate Spanish National Champion Abdollulla Diaz for two of the three rounds was adjudged to have lost his 56kg contest. Bayode, in only his eighth contest, was excellent against a much more experienced athlete.
