A TEENAGE Warrington bowler became the second winner of the Carter Law Trophy on Saturday.
Matt Gatley won the annual junior open bowls tournament at Poynton Sports Club.
The 16-year-old also took home a cheque for £100.
Gatley, from Padgate, has been playing bowls since the age of six alongside dad Anthony and grandfather John.
He beat Tixall Bowling Club’s Jordan McDermot in the final after the 15-year-old had knocked out two-time champion Tom Eccles, of Rochdale.
Gatley said: “I never really expected to win with players like Tom and Jordan in the competition.
“It’s a really high standard and I had to be at my best to reach the final.”
Gatley began playing at The Grange Club in Latchford and is now a member of the St Oswald’s Academy. He was capped for the Cheshire senior team last year.
It was a first major title for Gatley, who won 21-10 in the final after beating Birmingham’s Ryan Walters 21-12 in the last four.
Ben Holbrook, secretary at Poynton Sports Club, who has organised the Carter Law junior tournament since its inception in 2013, said: “The standard gets better each year.
“It’s also a pleasure to watch young people behaving in such a sporting manner at what has become a big family day out.”
The 25 competitors, including three girls, came from as far afield as Birmingham, Merseyside and Yorkshire.
