WARRINGTON-based boxer Martin Murray will make a quick return to the ring following his emphatic two-round demolition of George Beroshvili in Liverpool on his super middleweight debut, writes Mike Critchley.

The 32-year-old made short work of the Georgian on Friday, creasing his opponent with a punishing body shot to finish the contest after 2.29 minutes of the second round.

His Barmy Army, used to long-haul outings to Monte Carlo, Germany and Argentina, now have another short trip with Murray’s name being added to the bill at the Manchester Arena on July 18.

The three-time world middleweight title challenger was confident and commanding from the off.

That is probably understandable, given the last time the St Helens-born fighter was in the ring he was going toe-to-toe with Gennady Golovkin for the world title in February.

He bossed the opening round, constantly forcing the Georgian backwards with his powerful punching.

Murray had already smartly landed a number of body shots before catching Beroshvili with a lethal left to the body from which he was never going to get up from.

Without getting carried away at ringside Murray declared: “I felt great in there, very strong and I think that super middleweight is going to be my good for me.

“The Golovkin fight is in the past now, I learnt a lot from it and I’ve soaked that experience up but I’ve moved on from it and I’m looking forward to making an impact at super middle.

“I will leave it to Eddie (Hearn) and Oliver Harrison to see where we go next but I can see myself in some big fights.”

Speaking immediately post-fight Hearn, who was obviously impressed not just by Murray’s craft and power but his ability to bring a crowd, added: “Martin’s had great fights with big names, he has a great following and he can get the big fights at super middleweight.

“I want to get him out ASAP so we’ll sit down right away and plot the next fight, but it’s a great start at super middleweight for him.”

That next fight will come two weeks on Friday at the Manchester Arena, and will again be televised live on Sky Sports.

Murray, who is chasing the big domestic names on the super middleweight scene, is delighted to be back out again so soon in the north west.

“It’s great to be busy and getting another fight so quickly.

“I want to fight the best out there.

“I boxed the best at middle and I want to do the same at super middleweight, and I believe that now I am up at 168lbs I will do that at my natural weight and win a world title,” he said.
