Woolston Rovers 32 Crosfields 4

PROUD head coach John Fieldhouse said his players deserved their success in the National Conference League ‘derby’ against Crosfields.

“I was absolutely delighted with every player,” he said after a vintage Rovers display at Monks Sports Club.

“They carried out the game plan perfectly and got their just desserts.”

He said it was a performance that had been coming.

“We have noticed over the past month or so that we were gradually starting to play at a higher standard than we had been doing and we really did raise the bar to a different level,” he added.

“We were patient when we had the ball which paved the way for us to score some top quality tries and our defence was first class.

“To restrict a very good side like Crosfields to just one try is a great achievement.”

Rovers have a three-week gap between league games although they do have a ‘Warrington Cup’ game against Bank Quay Bulls on Wednesday.

“We will use the time before our next game to work on certain areas that we feel we can improve on even further,” he said.

Sixteen-year-old Chris Twigg made his full debut on the wing, scoring a try and producing some strong defence to keep Rovers’ line intact at a crucial period.

Rovers, entering the action on an unbeaten three-game run, opened the scoring in the sixth minute through Paul Berry before Twigg’s effort doubled the lead.

James Rosson went over but Crosfields, with Lewis Bani in the sin bin, got themselves back into the game with a try from Jack Probert, who was among Hayden James, John Whittaker and Luke Jones as Soap’s best performers.

Berry completed his brace early in the second period before man-of-the-match Ryan Brown started and finished the try of the game on the hour mark.

Chris Mellor powered over at the side of the posts and the last try came from Glyn Roberts, who landed one conversion from six attempts.

Berry, Billy Maunder, Matt Clarke and Jake Upton caught the eye for Woolston.
