TONY Smith hopes a quick turnaround can be a positive for Warrington Wolves after their Magic Weekend loss to St Helens.

Wolves, who were beaten 16-20 at St James’ Park on Sunday, host Catalans Dragons on Friday at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

And Smith insists his side have plenty to rectify after a second half in which Wolves failed to score saw them throw away a winning position.

“The big thing for us is a quick turnaround,” said Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby. “It’s probably a positive for us, we’re keen to get out and put 80 minutes together.

“Having a Sunday to Friday is a good thing to look forward to try and rectify things – it’s tough on the bodies though.”

Smith was pleased with a first half that saw Wolves take a 16-8 lead thanks to tries from Stefan Ratchford, Ryan Atkins and Ben Harrison.

“If we find that sort of performance we put in for the first 40 minutes I think most teams in the comp that we would compete with,” he added.

“We were really good in terms of what we handled, aside from that kick. It was a ricochet and bounced awkwardly for Stef, but I didn’t think we were too threatened.

“We were soft in the second half in terms of our defence and with the ball. We were turning the ball over in our own half.

“Some of our decisions on when to pass and when to spread the ball; we were pretty good at that in the first half, a couple of times we put a bit of pressure on ourselves.

“We took some really soft options in that second half. We were pretty dominant in that first half, but Saints showed their spirit.

“They came out and deserved to win that second half, that’s for sure.”
