BRIAN Carman described a session at Cicely Mill Pool this week with grandson Andrew as ‘brilliant’.

Fishing the pole at five metres with red maggot on the hook, on a peg to the left of the car park, the youngster caught between 25 and 30 roach and rudd to 12ozs.

Brian, being more of a traditionalist, fished the waggler to end up with a similar catch that included a few crucians.

I have heard on the grapevine that the Cicely Common has been out again recently at over 30lbs, disproving rumours the old faithful has gone to fish heaven.

Offa’s Dyke is still producing good sport with plenty of silver fish, carp and the occasional chub.

George Griffiths restored my faith in the original lake, nearest to the car park, by having a mixed bag of roach, tench, bream, and two small carp on pole and pellet fished at 12 metres to the island.

This small fishery complex is strictly members-only, like the majority of our waters.

The bailiff team that covers our Wigan area fisheries report Woodshaw Reservoir is in form with lots of roach and rudd being caught along with a few crucians.

A few carp are being caught at Worthington Lakes but lots of roach and bream, to mainly feeder tactics, with a few stalwarts catching well of slider and loose-feeding maggot.

Jimmy Byrne made it two wins in a row when he led the field in this week’s disabled and over 60s match at Red Brow Underbridge with a net of skimmers, hybrids and roach for 5-4-8.

Dennis Bates was runner-up with a similar catch of 4-0-4.

Bread punch and pole again proved to be the best method.

Despite most anglers being mindful of their environmental responsibilities there remains a small minority that either leave their litter on our fisheries or ditch it on their way home.

We do not want people like that as members of our club. Anybody caught will face being banned.

We now have a Facebook page for volunteers.

If you are interested in helping your club, and wish to know where and when working parties are taking place, apply to join.
