TONY Smith has hailed one of his rising stars as a future Warrington captain.

He was speaking after seeing 20-year-old Ben Currie play his part in an impressive 29-10 toppling of Leeds Rhinos at Headingley Carnegie.

Wolves' captaincy role has been held by some of the greatest players to have graced the sport - Michael Monaghan, Adrian Morley and Lee Briers in recent times, Mike Gregory and Harry Bath looking further back.

But Smith sees the potential in a player who has been an ever present in the team this season and has scored tries in three successive matches using his speed in great support play.

"He's smart and coming into his own in the past few weeks," said Wolves' head of coaching and rugby.

"He's been a good prospect and had some big matches for some time but he's getting some consistency about his performances.

"And he's still a young man. It takes time for young men to learn the game and step up and become consistent.

"He's certainly doing that at the moment.

"He reads plays, he's becoming more vocal. He's a furture captain of our club as well because he's got some leadership within his years.

"Ben's a smart cookie - very good!"
