ASHTON Sims’ try-scoring record is hardly prolific, and he won’t be patting himself on the back for too long, but the Fiji captain admits he was excited to cross for the first time in primrose and blue.

The 30-year-old crashed over from close range during Wolves’ 80-0 win against Wakefield on Saturday to score for the first time in nearly three years.

And while Sims was delighted to get off the mark, he was pleased to help his Warrington teammates end a four-game losing stint.

“I haven’t scored a try in about three years,” said Australian-born Sims. “It’s been a long time between drinks and I wanted to get one out of the way nice and early.

“The celebration, I just threw the ball up and was watching it, I was pretty excited. I’m certainly looking for another one or two.

“The last couple of weeks have been tough but the luck hasn’t gone our way a bit. No excuses, we came out on the weekend and played our brand of footie and were able to score a few points.”

Sims endured similar losing runs with North Queensland Cowboys in the NRL last year, but says Wolves should be judged on how they progress from here.

“I’ve been through a couple of them,” he explained. “Last year we lost three in a row twice, we ended up really well at the end of the year.

“Some teams go through it. It’s how you get through the other side, that’s what you’re classed on and how people judge you.

“We’ve got to worry about ourselves before anything, make sure our rugby is in order and we’re playing the best rugby we can.

“To be consistent and finish in that top four spot, I think that’s still realistic for us. We’ve got to work on our consistency, we did well last week and we’ve got to back that up on Thursday.”

Sunday’s win had a youthful look to it and Sims has challenged those youngsters to build on that form, lending some advice he received from former St George Illawarra coach Nathan Brown.

“Training was great before and there’s a really buzz again,” he explained. “We’ve got a lot of confidence in the depth of our squad.

“Young guys, coming in and chomping at the bit, to play as well as they did is a great look for the club.

“A couple of them have come to me and I’ve certainly given them advice.

“My first NRL coach Nathan Brown actually said to me, ‘congratulations, you’re in the squad. It’s hard to make the team but it’s even harder to stay in the team playing this quality rugby week in, week out. You’ve got to be still yourself and make sure you’re confident’.”

Wolves’ outing at Wigan Warriors tonight, Thursday, marks the end of four games in 15 days – a first taste of the hectic Easter schedule for Sims – with an eight-day turnaround before visiting Leeds.

“It’s the first time I’ve played these games so close together and I’m feeling pretty good coming through the other side,” he added.

“I’m looking forward to the next two games, but more importantly we’ve got Wigan on Thursday and one I know everyone here is looking forward to.

“Everyone’s a lot more upbeat but we can’t go patting ourselves on the back too long. We’ve got a real stern test this Thursday.

“We’re going to have to be on our game. They’re a well-drilled team, they’ve got great skills and are defensively sound.

“It’s a challenge we’re ready for.”
