TOM Murray had to watch on as The Madeira Islands Open in Portugal became only the third event in European Tour history to be cancelled yesterday.

The Lymm golfer completed the first round, shooting one over par, but it took three days for the whole field to finish due to strong winds, heavy rain and thick fog.

Organisers shortened the event to 36 holes, but a torrent of rain at the picturesque island venue of Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra meant it had to be cancelled on Sunday.

The only other events to be cancelled were the Compaq European Grand Prix in 1998 because of weather, and the WGC-American Express Championship following the September 11 terrorist attacks.
